Anti-Corruption Management Standard Introduced to Curb Corruption

PUTRAJAYA – The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through the Department of Standards Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched a standard system known as the Malaysian Standard MS ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management Systems (ABMS) to provide a guideline and to assist an organization to conduct and improve their anti-corruption management system in their organization.

This Malaysian Standard (MS ISO 37001:2016) is implemented as a corruption prevention standard to every party especially commercial organizations in preparation for the challenges in implementing the Corporate Liability provision which is still in the amendment of suggestion level to the bill for MACC Act 2009.

MACC has taken the initiative and hopes that this ISO 37001 standard is accepted as the Malaysian Standard – MS ISO 37001:2016 to further expand the use of this standard for users or organizations in this country.

MS ISO 37001:2016 has outlined multiple policies and procedures that can be followed and used by organizations as an anti-corruption control system benchmark to help companies or organizations in implementing an effective management system in preventing, detecting and curbing corruption that can occur in an organization.

Compliance with MS ISO 37001:2016 can be made a benchmark for an organization to implement an effective and proactive anti-corruption system in curbing corruption symptoms.

This standard can be implemented in every type of organization whether involving private as well as government companies, from small, medium to large scale.

It can give confidence to customers and people about the efforts taken by the government to create a corruption free environment. Apart from enhancing image and integrity of organizations that follow this standard, an integrity governance is important because corruption is a symptom that can demolish a society’s quality of life and competitiveness of a country.

MACC as the corruption prevention regulator in Malaysia and scheme owner to the Program Akreditasi ABMS that will be launched will ensure an accredited certification body by the Department of Standards Malaysia is competent and has the knowledge about the provision of corruption prevention laws in Malaysia.

For the time being, compliance with MS ISO 37001:2016 is voluntarily until it is gazetted or referred to in an act or the involved technical law.

MS ISO 37001:2016 is also made into a main guideline and reference for the management system certification program based on ISO 37001 that was conducted on September last year.

Until now, there are 5,337 MS ISO 37001:2016 across multiple industrial sectors that have been developed by MOSTI through the Department of Standards Malaysia.
