Datuk Seri Azam Baki Appointed As New Chief Commissioner Of MACC

I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for his consent to my appointment as the new Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) effective 9th March 2020.

I would also like to thank the Honorable Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for recommending my name to His Majesty The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

Furthermore, on behalf of the MACC, I thank Puan Latheefa Koya for her contribution and service during her tenure as the 14th Chief Commissioner of the MACC for having successfully led this anti-graft agency.

BACKGROUND OF DATUK SERI HAJI AZAM BAKI

Datuk Seri Azam Baki, 57, began his career at the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) in 1984 as an Assistant Investigation Officer.

During his service at ACA, he carried out duties as Investigation Officer, Intelligence Officer, Prosecuting Officer as well as taking part in community education activities.

He graduated with a Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power) from the University Technology Malaysia (UTM), a Degree in Law (Jurisprudence) from University of Malaya and a Master’s Degree in Business Operation from Asia E-University and had served the MACC for over 35 years.

His vast experience in various fields within and outside of the MACC moulded him towards a high-flying career path which brought him to top positions as Director of Intelligence (2013), Director of Investigation (2015) and Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) in 2016.

Throughout his career, he has extensive experience in investigating high-profile cases as reported in the media. Among them was the uncovering of the ‘Lesen Terbang' (illegal licence) case in 2000, where he was the mastermind behind the investigation, following which 100 individuals were arrested and 100,000 illegal licenses were blacklisted. From this case, the government has since revamped the probationary driving license test from manual to computerized system.

He was also a pioneer in the forfeiture of properties system under the Anti-Corruption Act 1997, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2010 (AMLATFPUAA).

In addition, Datuk Seri Azam also planned and drove undercover operation method as well as investigation method of high-profile cases effectively. The methods he introduced have been widely used by the MACC since 2013.

This method of investigation brought huge success to MACC in investigating a variety of high-profile and public interest cases such as Ops Water Gate, 1MDB, SRC International Sdn. Bhd. and cases involving senior government officials such as Division Secretary and Secretary-General as well as many other dignitaries.
