APEC ACTWG SOM III Held Virtually For The First Time

FOLLOWING the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently affecting the whole world, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Anti-Corruption and Transparency Experts’ Working Group (ACTWG) Meeting virtually for the first time ever starting today until 23 October 2020.

This marks the second time Malaysia is hosting APEC 2020 Conference, after being the host for the first time in 1998.

This ACTWG meeting is attended by representatives from 21 APEC economies, where among the agendas that will be discussed include the anti-corruption efforts and initiatives around the Asia Pacific and new agendas involving corruption issues and governance transparency of Covid-19 funds. This ACTWG Meeting is chaired by the MACC Chief Commissioner, YBhg. Datuk Seri Hj. Azam bin Baki.

Besides the hosting of this ACTWG Meeting, the MACC is also hosting a Network on Anti-Corruption Authorities and Law Enforcement Agencies (ACT-NET) Meeting to be attended by agency representatives and anti-corruption enforcers within the APEC economies. This ACT-NET Meeting will discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation in combating corruption, money laundering and illegal trade.

Besides that, a Capacity Building Workshop on Exposing the Unseen Hands: Tackling Concealment of Beneficial Ownership is also held virtually, analysing current topics and issues involving beneficiary ownership. The hosting of this workshop involves the attendance of local and international speakers to share their knowledge and expertise.

For the international program to be a success, the MACC APEC 2020 Secretariat established a close cooperation with the APEC Secretariat based in Singapore and the National APEC Secretariat which is the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
