Receiving Bribes: Two Macc Officers Charged Today

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has charged two of its officers for receiving bribes in cash at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court, today.

The first accused, Amir Izham Shahak, 32, who is the Assistant Superintendent of MACC pleaded guilty to the optional charge of Section 417 of the Penal Code which provides for an imprisonment of up to five years or a fine or both.

The court has set the case ruling to be on 24 November and allowed the accused a bail of RM7,000 with one surety and his passport to be handed to the court.

Meanwhile, the second accused, Wan Kamarul Za’im Wan Mansor, 34, who is the Superintendent of MACC pleaded not guilty against the main charge of Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and the optional charge of Section 417 of the Penal Code.

Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years, a fine five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court allowed the accused a bail of RM7,000 with one surety and his passport to be handed to the court and set 24 November as the date of mention for the case.

For the MACC, the case was handled by the Deputy Public Prosecutor of MACC, Suhaili Sapun.
