Regional Cooperation Important to Fight Corruption

PUTRAJAYA, 21 Oct. – Cross-border cooperation and coordination are important in the effort to fight corruption, embezzlement and abuse of power crimes.

The MACC Chief Commissioner, Datuk Seri Azam Baki said due to corruption has become more complicated and transnational, the efforts to fight corruption and money laundering cannot be achieved by only one institution or economy, but requires cooperation in order to increase cross-border collaboration and coordination.

“ACT-NET has functioned as a good platform to cooperate in fighting corruption crimes and illegal money laundering,” he said.

He added, Malaysia has vowed in giving its commitment and adhere to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and as a party, will cooperate in its implementation.

He said that in his keynote address during the Network on Anti-Corruption Authorities and Law Enforcement Agencies (ACT-NET) Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Meeting that was held virtually.

Meanwhile, MACC is also active in the Economic Crime Agencies Network (ECAN) which is the official law enforcement agency network from multiple economies, among them are members of APEC that are involved especially in investigating and fighting economic and corruption crimes.

In attendance were the Director of Investigations, Dato' Norazlan Mohd Razali as the Malaysian Delegation Chief and the Director of Policy, Planning & Research, TPj Mohd Hafaz Nazar as the ACT-NET Chairman.
