MACC Investigations Focused On The Identification And Recovery Of Funds Related To 1MDB

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) refers to the disclosure of the key witness, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Southeast Asia director Tim Leissner at the United States Court in the case relating to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds that involves Dr. Tawfiq Ayman, who is the husband of former Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

The MACC clarifies that this is not a new issue. The former Attorney General at the end of 2018 has coordinated the investigations between the MACC and the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) regarding this case.

Through this coordination, MACC's focus was to identify and to recover funds related to the 1MDB case, including a total of US$15.4 million, which involves the account of Cutting Edge Industries Ltd. belonging to Tawfiq. On 19 November 2021, the MACC issued a press statement to confirm the recovery.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General's Chambers instructed the RMP to focus on the aspect of criminal offences on the transfer of funds into the account belonging to Tawfiq in Singapore and the investigation is still ongoing till now.

This coordination is to avoid any duplication in investigations involving the collection of evidence and statements of those involved, as well as to facilitate dealings with Singapore which has given priority to a single enforcement agency to conduct investigations on criminal offences.

Therefore, there are no issues of failure of any enforcement agencies to identify, investigate and to prosecute any offences in the financial transactions as was raised by several parties.
