Trio remanded in RM65,000 false claims probe

GEORGE TOWN: Three men from a medical devices company were remanded for four days here today to assist in an investigation into alleged false claims made to government relief agencies for RM65,000.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 37, were brought to the magistrates’ court by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

They are suspected of having made claims to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and the zakat and other government agencies relating to the purchase of orthopaedic implants.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 for deceiving a principal agent, which carries a maximum 20 years’ jail or a fine of five times the sum involved, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Azlan Basri asked for a seven-day remand order as the trio were needed for a larger investigation involving 50 witnesses, but senior assistant registrar Balqis Roslin granted a four-day remand order.

Lawyers E Gnanasegaran, Audrey Wee Li Ye and Arvend Rajandran represented the suspects.
