Civil servants vital in eradicating corruption

PUTRAJAYA, 30 APRIL - The culture of corruption and abuse of power in the country has not been described as a pandemic, but this issue is serious and worrying.

Based on the statistic of arrests made by the MACC from 2015 to 2020, a total of 5,652 arrests were made and from that number, a total of 2,683 or 47.5 percent were civil servants. Meanwhile, a total of 1,347 consist of the public and others.

The Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Datuk Seri Azam Baki said, the statistic shows the potential involvement of government servants in corruption issues is quite high.

“In my opinion, the issue of corruption needs to be addressed systematically and comprehensively. If the symptoms of corruption are not curbed, it can cause the matter to continue in becoming a pandemic and push towards a ‘high level’.

“Thus, in performing duties, the most important thing to practise is that we need to have integrity in order for zero opportunities of corruption, misappropriation and abuse of power.

"I urge every party to collaborate in making this country that is always free from corruption practises. This is because it can also negatively impact Malaysia in becoming a developed country earlier than its initial target.

Therefore, he requires the full support and involvement of all parties involving all levels of society especially in the civil service to eradicate corruption symptoms to the grassroots level.

He said that while being the guest of honour for the Seminar in conjunction with the 2021 Labour Day Celebration with the title ‘The Role of Civil Servants in Tackling Corruption' organised by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) which was held virtually at MACC Headquarters here, today.

Also present were President of CUEPACS, Tuan Hj Adnan Mat; Director of MACC Strategic Communication Division (BKS), PKPj Kamaruddin M. Ripin and Deputy Director of MACC Community Education Divison (PenMas), KPKPj Mohamad Tarmize Abdul Manaf representing the Director of PenMas.
