The main objective of the Act is to protect witnesses who fear for their safety during the investigation and prosecution of a corruption case. Witness who fears for the security and welfare of themselves and their family, friends and close associates can forward an application for the protection through the MACC to the Witness Protection Unit (WPU) which is under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department.
A person who can testify (to the agency and in the court of law) based on the knowledge or involvement in any crime, including acts of corruption and/or its transactions. Such person will be determined as a witness during the investigation and their testimony can be used as an evidence.
Witnesses are protected under the Witness Protection Act 2009.
