PUTRAJAYA, 12 Mac – The 28th Meeting of the APEC Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACTWG) was held on 27 February – 2 March 2019 in the framework of the first Senior Officials Meeting (SOM 1) in Santiago, Chile.

The four-day meeting was attended by representatives from 21 APEC Member economies and representatives from United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), World Bank and Transparency International (IT) participated in the meetings as guests and shared their activities and initiatives on anti-corruption.

 In the meetings, the Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operation) of MACC, Datuk Seri Azam Baki as Vice Chair of the meeting made a presentation on progress and developments on the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), the Beijing Declaration on Fighting Corruption, and other initiatives related to anti-corruption and transparency. Besides that, the presentation of the APEC Project 2020, Concept Note entitled "Symposium on Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment to Fight Corruption" was also shared and presented by PsK Hong Chin Chin from the Policy, Planning and Research Division (BDPP). 

Some of the other issues discussed were Chile’s Work Plan for 2019, Multi Year Strategic Plan 2013-2021, 15 Years Statement Proposal, ACTWG Work Plan 2019 and Cross-Fora Collaboration. In this regard, the ACTWG discussed actively how to move its work forward to keep implementing its commitments, strengthening cooperation, and promoting cross-border coordination between APEC Member economies.

The MACC delegation also attended the "Digital Government, Integrity Policies and Corruption Prevention Mechanisms Workshop in APEC Economies". The workshop focuses on sharing good practices by governments in implementing laws, policies, and initiatives to implement integrity programs in the public sector and enhance transparency through electronic procedures. 

In addition, the MACC delegation also attended a Cross-Fora Meeting organized by Chile in collaboration with APEC Sub-Fora namely Custom Procedure and Corruption, Policy Partnership on Women and the Economic Working Group and Small and Medium Enterprises Working Group (SMEs). Malaysia as the Vice Chair for this ACTWG meeting and will be the Chair and host for APEC 2020 was also invited to attend the Friends of the Chair (FOTC) Meeting chaired by the Chile and attended by representatives from the United States, Australia, Canada and Vietnam. 

In fact, the MACC posited to give full commitment to Chile in the success of the next meeting to be held in August this year to ensure corruption-related issues continue to be the agenda of the discussion in this group.
